Bloomberg Configuration w/Sonicwall Ports

September 1st, 2010 by Wally Hass

Bloomberg needs the following ports opened on the firewall:
48129-48137/udp
8194-8196/tcp
8209-8220/tcp
8290-8294/tcp

These can be added under Firewall/Services. Add four services something like:
bloomberg_48129
bloomberg_8194
bloomberg_8209
bloomberg_8290

Then created a group called Bloomberg and add these four services to the group. Then go into Firewall, LAN->WAN and allow from Firewall Subnets to Any using Bloomberg and you should be good. These port definitions are from the latest Transport and Security Specification dated May 10, 2010.

As always, define your outbound rules by services groups and do not setup LAN->WAN Any rules. This is sloppy firewall configuration and makes it hard to troubleshoot issues.

TC Futures Chat Firewall Issues – Sonicwall

July 15th, 2010 by Wally Hass

If trying to use TC Futures Chat through a firewall and having problems, you will need to open port 18001/tcp on your firewall to allow access. On a Sonicwall, create a service for TC Futures Chat and then setup a rule to use that service from your firewalled subnets to the Any.

Hope that helps

Fake GoDaddy E-Mail Confirmation of Order

June 22nd, 2010 by Wally Hass

Beware of these e-mails that appear to come from GoDaddy. They look legit but if you mouse over the links, they take you to non-GoDaddy sites and appear to be infected with Malware. I received 5 of them today and they were able to make it past our filters (Postini/Google/Trendmicro), so please be aware.

TC Futures Chat and Firewall Ports

June 3rd, 2010 by Wally Hass

If using the website TC Futures Chat or http://www.traderscapitalchat.net/, and having problems using their chat rooms, your firewall is probably to blame. They use chat software from Host Gator and configured to use ports 20001/tcp and 843/tcp. Using a Sonicwall, create the two services (tc_chat1 and tc_chat2) on those specific ports and then great a Service Group called TC_Chat_Group. Add the two services you created and then setup a LAN -> WAN rule.

Let me know of any issues.

“Canvas Does not Allow Drawing” Fix

April 28th, 2010 by Wally Hass

Recent problem on client computer when trying to print out of a program called Jetfile.  The client would get a “canvas does not allow drawing” error and it would not print to PDF.  We had recently done some moving of computers in that office and noticed when he printed to PDF, he first had to un-check the option to print to his network printer that no longer existed.  Even though he was not trying to print to that printer, when he selected print to PDF and tried to print, the error would come up.  By changing his default printer to a working printer, this fixed his canvas/pdf errors using Jetfile.

Hope that helps someone

Windows Update Error 80072F8F on Vista

August 20th, 2009 by Wally Hass

If you are unable to pull updates from Microsoft and get the error 80072F8F, this is a problem with time on your computer.  This is very common after a spyware/malware problem.  You can click on the clock in the bottom right corner and select “Change Date and Time Settings”.   Change the date/time to the current day and close to the current time.  Then select the tab for Internet Time, Change Settings and click Update Now to sync the time over the Internet.

Once that is done, try to check for Windows Updates again.

Fix for “Server Execution Error” on Vista

August 20th, 2009 by Wally Hass

Recently ran into the problem of “Server Execution Error” when trying to open the Network and Sharing Center in Vista after a virus/spyware problem on a client PC.  After cleaning the virus/spyware issues, the problem persisted.  Fixed by running a command prompt  as an administrator:

net localgroup “Administrators” “NT Authority\Local Service ” /add

Configuring RCG Onyx Trading System through a Sonicwall Firewall

August 20th, 2009 by Wally Hass

The RCG Onyx Trading System uses ports 6002/tcp and 9002/tcp in order to pass through your firewall.  You will need to go into Services on your Sonicwall and add these two services before going into Rules and creating a LAN->WAN rule.  If running SonicOS Enhanced, you can bundle the two Onyx services into a group to make things easier.
