Identify Device by MAC Address

A MAC address (short for Media Access Control) is baked into every network interface at the factory. The IEEE first standardized MAC addressing in the early 1980s to solve a simple problem: how do Ethernet devices on the same wire recognize each other without collisions? Those 48 bits became the foundation for modern Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and wired networking.

Because MAC addresses are unique within your local network, they act like a device serial number for IT teams. When you can quickly read or confirm a MAC address, you can tie it back to the right hardware, track inventory, enforce port security, and confirm a device is allowed on a secure VLAN or wireless SSID.
